In 2016, the Fasetti company began to reissue furniture designed by Carl-Gustaf Hiort af Ornäs (1911–1996), known as a designer of high-standard furniture. The impressive Siesta armchair, originally designed in 1952, was displayed at the Habitare Fair of 2016. In the coming autumn, three new models will be added to the collection, all of them expressing the elegant, timeless and practical design typical of Hiort af Ornäs.
The shapely Pedro armchair
There is a cosy shapeliness of the 1950s in the forms of the Pedro chair. But in addition to creating forms of beauty, Hiort af Ornäs also studied his chair designs closely to provide a good ergonomic seating position. With its convenient dimensions and sculptural form, Pedro can be combined with modern contemporary interior design. The chair is available with tens of different upholstery fabrics and the legs can be ordered in oak, mahogany or birch.
The graceful Pedro sofa
Designed in the 1950s, Pedro is a compact two-seater sofa of beautiful curving shape. Its carefully crafted appearance continues on the rear side. One of the cornerstones of Hiort af Ornäs’s work in design was for the furniture to look good from all angles of view. The graceful Pedro sofa with its wooden frame can be placed in the middle of a room. It is also suited to small living rooms or to be combined into a larger suite with armchairs of the Hiort af Ornäs collection.
The streamlined Lehti armchair
The Lehti (Leaf) armchair combines an upholstered seat with light legs of metal tubing. It is of streamlined modern shape, although it was already designed in 1956. As in all of Hiort af Ornäs’s reissued furniture designs, the frame of the Lehti chair is made with the same materials and techniques that were originally used over 60 years ago. The structure of the seat is plywood and the upholstery is of high-quality Kvadrat woollen fabric or Designers Guild plush velvet.
New upholstery choices and a footstool for the Siesta armchair
Siesta is an impressive armchair that was first introduced in 1952. It is now available in several upholstery versions, including high-quality, fashionable cognac-coloured leather. Fasetti has designed a footstool in the spirit of Hiort af Ornäs’s furniture to accompany Siesta.
Design critic Alice Rawsthorn of the New York Times chose the reissue of furniture by Hiort af Ornäs as the best concept of the Habitare Fair of 2016.
Carl-Gustaf Hiort af Ornäs (1911 –1996) was a Finnish furniture designer who headed his own furniture factory, Puunveisto, in Lauttasaari in Helsinki from the 1940s to the 1970s. He believed in Danish-style handcrafted furniture production of high quality. As a designer, he was ahead of his time in developing impressive plywood furniture of sculpturally curved forms.
Fasetti is a company specialising in antiques and furniture made to order. In 2016, Fasetti began to reissue furniture designed by Hiort af Ornäs. All the items of furniture are made in Finland of high-quality materials with the methods of craftsmanship.
